PermaLink Next step in education for the three-year-olds11/03/2006 08:47 AM
Our three-year-olds are progressing and we are seeing more of their individual potential.

We have picked out Pekhimli to train towards the show hunter/jumper discipline, we are happy that she will be in very good and knowledgeable hands to train and show as a hunter. She is a cool and easy going girl, with a turbo jet button though, l that has shown a great potential when she has been free jumping lately. She is being Americanised and is now being called Peggy Sue. As Pekhimli is of a very gentle and generous nature, she does not mind at all.

Merdjen has a lot of strenght, power and energy. She is a very hard working girl who is great on focusing and performing, once she is at work, nothing will bother her. She has shown great potential over fences in free jumping, she also has a body build for jumping. She will go to a jumper trainer for a while, once she has evened out, so that we can evaluate her potential a little bit more, I also prefer to send a young, energetic horse to jumper oriented people as the horses are ridden more outdoors in forward mode. We have found a very good trainer in our area that has promised to take our Tekes for jumper education.

Rosanna is an extraordinary horse, she has a hughe personality and she makes everyone fall in love with her. She is superfast in her reactions but can show a lack of self confidence. She needs a sensitive but experienced rider that she can trust, for this rider she will walk through fire.
After a few sessions of free jumping on small fences, she has come out a great jumper, lots of scope and confidence over fences. She will be continuing the jumper track in her education to even if she has great movements to go in the dressage direction to. She has the typical Teke fore leg activity that for many Tekes compensates a little bit for the lack of ability to sit on their hindlegs, however Rosanna has shown an ability to sit to, which is great, she has the size a little bit against her as she is only 15.1 at this point, but if we can find the right rider for her she will look impressive and big enough once she is moving.

The two-year-olds are still in kindergarden.
Rosanna's full brother Orion has excellent movements, balance and elasticity, he is not yet under rider but looks very nice over the free jumps to. His attitude is very good and he really loves to work and enjoys human attention, typical Teke mentality combined with good looks.

Astra is built and moves more towards a dressage type of horse, she going to be a big girl and is mostly going through growth spurts and is still not really comfortable with her body. However, she is the perfect combination of her mother and father's mentality, very calm and relaxed, but she can turn on her jet turbo motor when you ask her and she be be really fierce when she does that. She has done some really nice turbo jumps to. However, she is growing and growing and growing. I'm looking forward to see her under rider! We will have time to find a suitable dressage oriented trainer in our area.

Maya is the classical Teke beauty, she is growing a lot and at this point she is trying to find herself in her large and long lined body with movements that sometimes as to big for her. She is supercool to work with, she has been over a few small jumps but has not yet worked out the technique, she is the big goof and we are just waiting for her to mature and grow into her body and mentality.

Prizma is small, jet black and supersensitive. She cannot be pushed or rushed with, great horse to work with, she is a spitting image of her father, if you do everything right she will give you the perfect performance.

We enjoy having all this young horses and see them develop, this is the first generation of Teke we have bred that we have kept as potential breeding stock and it is so exciting to train them ourselves.
For me as a breeder, there are three evaluation points that are the most exciting number one is the birth, what will the baby look like, number two is how will your breeding perform, and number three how will you breeding produce.
All three steps are so exciting. I wouldn't want to skip step two as even if you do not take your horse into advanced level in competition, the balance, gaits mentality under rider will tell you so much about the horse and its individual value, this cannot be estimated or guessed, it has to be tested. Many horses also only reach step two as they will not be considered for breeding, which is more ok with me than a horse that was born and later bred without having been tested as a riding horse. Of course there will be exceptions but if you skip several generations which seemes to be the development in this breed especially for mares, then you do not know any longer what you are breeding.

Just out of curiousity, what trainer are you using for hunters and jumpers? Maybe I know them... ;)

To add to Jessica`s comment about the growth spur my horse which was bred by Karakumstud, Paikhas (Tiki) seem to push amazing 16 hands this fall. She grew up a lot this summer. I can see the beatifull Akhal Teke finally approaching from the growing body.
It seem that just now body catches up with the legs even though she is already 4 year old. She is mentally very alert and interested in new things and love to do the job. We still have to overcome the issue with lamas who live in our area near by but other than that we are happy campers riding in the back trails of the house and in the fields.
For the rest we train dressage. I took some time off in Canaries and just getting back to practise again with my trainer Kate Bonda.

Cantering is not an issue any longer since Tiki picks up on a right lead on a just a small movement of a feet. Her canter is deep and slow, slow only if you want it.She is a very safe horse to ride overall being Akhal Teke and 4 year old.

Appart from our dissagreement about the breeder Tito Pontecorvo I think KarakumStud brings the best sport Akhal Tekes who is ready to pass hands in a young age but well handled for today`s market. And it is the true.

When we got Paikhas we were told that she will be an easy girl to handle and it is true even many has questened my ability to ride 4-year old Akhal Teke up today. She was my first Akhal Teke and unfortunately probably be the most loved one ever. First love never ends...

She trains well and she seem to go forward on many things without much hesitation. She is not a strong spirit and once she sees you coming up with some gray or hay you won half of a battle.
She was recently seperated from her girl freind Akhal Teke Moira since we hope to progress faster this season and go to the first show. She seem more concentrated on training when she is not in the herd...She seem to flirt with Dolomit our stallion, once she passes by him. I guess somewhere deep in the blood she feels that it maybe that handsome guy... that Turkmeni dark bay Dolomit with Chineese eyes.

Good job breeders! She is the great horse!
