PermaLink Lexington and Ernesto 08/27/2006 03:58 PM
After having fed the horses and let them out for their morning galopp, I enjoyed a big latte by myself, a perfect morning until..

I decided to turn on the news, only to first hear the horrible news that an airplane crashed just after having taken off from Lexington Airport, 49 people died instantly and one survived . Well, we have already booked our flight and hotel now so let's hope for the best. The next not so good news for me and my latte was that Ernesto has turned into a hurricane and has been predicted to take its way over Tampa Bay, when I write this in the afternoon, Governor Bush has declared a state of emergency in Florida.
First thing tomorrow will be to make sure we stock up with lots of hay! Also we are in the process of making sure that we have no debris on our farm that might fly around and hurt the horses.

Jessica,

Another piece of advice, from the time I spent in NC under a hurricane watch.

The day before the storm, fill every empty water bucket, tub, and clean garbage can that you can. If the power goes out and stays out, your well won't work and you won't have to use your generator for the pump to get water to the horses.

Also, have fencing replacement supplies on hand, I don't know if you have wood or vinyl or wire. But if trees or power lines come down across the road, and you can't get out, you will have them on hand if trees or branches take your fence down. A chain saw is your best friend.

I lived on PB & J sandwiches for several days after an ice storm, in December, with no heat or hot water. You have no refrigeration or air conditioning to look forward to.

Best of luck, I hope it misses you.

Allegra

OO...after living in FL for most of my life... I can give you a few tips for weathering the storms...

Make sure you have Lots of water stored away...buy the gallon jugs ahead of time to beat the storm rush to stock up. Just keep a bunch around "just in case." My parents always had gallons of water stored in the garage and pantry. Also...buy non-parishables and food that you can prepare without electricity if you have to. We always had a lot of canned goods in the pantry because of this. A gas grill is nice to have handy also so you can cook some things. Just make sure you have gas for it!

After I moved to TN for college...my parents went through a bad one. The electricity and water didnt come back for like 2 weeks so they really depended on the supplies they had stored away even though the house wasnt badly damaged. I think the only thing that happened was some water damage from rain seeping in through the window cracks.

Remembering the LAST storm I went through there.. I remember going out to the barn...30 minutes from where I lived to check on my pony. He ended up being stuck in a stall that was now knee deep in mud and wet shavings. There had been sooo much rain that it saturated the ground and seeped into the barn. Only the aisle was concrete...the stalls were dirt covered by rubber matts. But at least he was safe and not in harms way of being struck by lightning...Ive heard of several people's horses being struck by lightning down there!

Hi

I live in Cornwall, UK and have been doing endurance riding for some 15 years or so. Now I am looking for a new partner and would like to know who to contact in UK who breeds these wonderful horses - Can you help?

Many thanks
Regards

Veryan

PS - I am glad to say we hardly ever have hurricanes but I'm keeping my fingers crossed you and the horses will all be okay!

4. Heather Mahoney08/29/2006 15:12:32

Veryan,
Out of curiosity, where in Cornwall are you? In general my family is from all over Wales and Scotland, but I have a grandfather from Carn Brae. I too am looking to find an AT partner for endurance riding!

Jessica,
More hurricane advice - if you have a deep freezer, you can freeze entire gallons of water. We were hit directly by hurricane Charley and had no water or power for 17 days. My dad always freezes water during the season to have on hand, and it REALLY comes in handy during power outages, when you have no AC to cool you down. Also, I went through 2 hurricanes when living on the warmblood ranch in Myakka, and we found that doubling up horses in stalls (where feasible) really helped keep them calm. We didn't the first storm, and we dealt with a lot of minor but annoying injuries that were self inflicted from stress (striking, kicking, etc). However, if they're not used to sharing space, it might be more of a stress than not. You know your animals, and can make that call.
Best of luck for the storm to all FL residents!

Heather

Veryan, we live in Devon, in Newton Abbot. Come and see our stallion Mualim. There aren't many good Teke in England these days but there are a few. I will give you some contacts. Stallion Chenghiz Khan is for sale - he belongs to someone in the UK though they are selling him in Holland. He is a tall, strong horse who was doing dressage but will benefit from being ridden out. By the way, bloggers, Tatiana told me a new stallion is coming to the UK - as a gift to someone.

6. Blanca09/01/2006 11:04:30

More info, Maria?

7. maria09/01/2006 12:13:13

Blanca, my head is like a sieve. I can't remember the name and Tatiana didn't know the name of the new owner when I spoke to her. I am going to get in touch with her and find out. I want to get in touch with the new owner, to prevent the disappointment Anna Samarenko, the owner of Chenghiz Khan, had to suffer when she tried to join the so-called Akhal-Teke Society of GB.

8. Blanca09/01/2006 14:14:35

It will be interesting to know which pedigree is coming to Europe.

What happened with the AT Society?

Leonid. Thank you for the link to the photos from the Moscow show, I am very happy to see that this year you look younger and more happy than last year.
However, I had a shock when I scanned through the rest of the photos from the Moscow show, I spotted a cow colored horse!
Where did it come from? Don't tell me they are going to produce Paint-Tekes in Russia!!!??? Big scandal.

11. Jessica 09/01/2006 16:41:02

Thank you all for your tips and support in the preparation for the storm! We were lucky this time and all we got was plenty of rain for two days. Horses were safe and dry in their big, dry stalls, our stable is placed high and dry and we do have concrete floors. It is a must here in Florida when the weather gets bad.
It seems like Ernesto will visit Virginia now, Allegra your turn to prepare!

Hi if anyone is intrested in Tekes in UK, I am currently waiting for two horses to arrive from Russia (be here in about two weeks). They are a gold buckskin stallion Dominik (Melezor-Dzhamna) line Gelishikli and a mare Oinam (Maksut-Opera) line Fakirpelvan. Stallion will be at stud and I'll breed the mare too. We are in Buckinghamshire near Aylesbury. If anyone is interested, drop me a line on blackfox84@hotmail.co.uk You can look up the information about these horses at www.akhalt-service.ru I am intending to make my own website but it's not ready yet.

Yes, the mare is very good, I'm hoping she will give us some really good foals. :)

20. Darya09/02/2006 03:04:06

When Akhalt service went to get passport for Oinam they have told them off for selling Oinam abroad, they wanted to keep her in Russia. :)

Darya, what stallion are you going to use for Oynam?

22. Jessica 09/03/2006 09:13:25

Veryan, I'm happy that you found Maria, she will be the perfect guide in the Teke jungle! Maybe you to can go together and look at an endurance prospect in the UK. An 11 year old gelding from Osman (bred by Pontecorvos) he has be regularely trained and has been doing some dressage and jumping. He was imported to the USA by the Pontecorvos and sold there and now ends up in the UK. Our experience with Osman babies is that they have excellent temperament and workability. Let me know what you think and I'll help you to get in touch with the owner.

23. Jessica09/03/2006 09:16:05

Hello Darya and welcome to the Teke family, I guess you will have some curious visitors as soon as your new Tekes have arrived.
If you want to publish pictures of your horses on this blog, please email me the pictures and I will publish them on the blog for everyone to look at, pictures of Tekes are very appreciated here.

24. Jessica09/03/2006 09:28:49

Leonid. Absolutely smashing picture of Shaar Shael from Equiros.
Can we use it, who has the copyright? We need these kind of photos of the Tekes!

26. Darya09/03/2006 11:20:45

Leonid> I am intending to breed her with my Dominik to start off with, I was thinking of breeding her to some different stallion at some point later so may be I can have another filly to breed with my stallion as I can't breed him with his own daughter. You can see info about Dominik on ahalt service web site, just look up in the news where it says two horses were sold to Darya Hannigan. He's very typical, I think, nice stallion line Gelishikli. He is not as tall (they had problem with oat supply when he was two), otherwise I think he could be elite. Let me know what you think of him. As I am pretty new to Teke world, I would really appreciate to hear peoples' opinion about my horses.

Jessica> Thank you very much for welcoming me and it is great you done such a lovely site where you give so much useful information and advise. It was interesting reading all of it. I am sending you some pics on e-mail, they are not best as I took them while visiting the stud farm in Russia and no chance to take good pictures. I will let you decide, whether post them or not, but I will certainly send you some good ones when the horses are here settled in and I have a chance to take good ones.

Akhalteke horses can not be elite, or not elite. They can be akhalteke, or not akhalteke. Your stallion is akhalteke. It is your choise to use him.

30. Darya09/03/2006 13:56:53

Thanks Leonid, it is just there is enough confusion with all that grading, that wasn't the point for me when I was looking for a horse anyway, first was typicalness, soundness (no defects so on) and the character too. The minute I saw Dominik I just fell in love with him. He has got very lively, sweet character. He is very playful, but never nasty. I think that will help in making of his sport career because character can be very important. I'm just so looking forward for both of them to come over and start working with them. Everything here is pretty much ready for them. It is a weird feeling when you have got everything there but the horses.:-

Maria > I would be very happy if you got in touch with me through my email blackfox84@hotmail.co.uk I am interested in getting in touch with all the Teke owners in GB, there are some ideas to be shared as I think we all have a big job of promoting the breed here. It is rather funny cos we have just moved out of Newton Abbot in July. :- I have never heard there was an Akhal Teke there.

31. Maria09/04/2006 18:07:44

Jessica

Where is this 11-year-old gelding by Osman in the UK????

32. Maria09/05/2006 18:02:04

Jessica,

Yes, there was a coloured horse at the show. It's rider even won prize for the best costume. I too was shocked. It was 1/2 AT, 1/4 carthorse and 1/4 something else and it sent Leonid scuttling from the show on the Friday night.

I think it might have been OK as a driving horse, perhaps, but in the context of the Moscow Meeting it was rather odd. (Personally, coloureds are not my thing but they are ever so popular in England these days. A passing fad, I am sure).

Talking of looks, we finally shaved Mualim's mane - he looks SUPER!

33. Jessica09/05/2006 20:40:32

Great news that you finaly cut the mane of Mualim. It is a ritual every Teke owner has to go through
If you like what you see when the mane is clipped, well then you have a good Teke.
I am looking forward to some nice pictures, why don't you try the "flying bear" trick with Mualim to see if you can catch a few super shots of him.

34. Darya09/06/2006 15:45:38

Jessica, I'm having trouble sending you the pics, both e-mails on this site bounce back.. Did you look at the pictures from the links?
